Frazier, Villarreal capture Pre HS miles

Ryen Frazier said she woke up in a cold sweat a week or so ago and experienced a moment of dread.

"It sort of just hit me that I've only got three (high school) meets left, and it made me kind of sad," Frazier said.

On Friday at Distance Night in Eugene -- the precursor to Saturday's main event Prefontaine Classic -- Frazier of Raleigh, N.C. dug deep on the home stretch and gutted out a narrow victory over Dani Jones of Desert Vista, Ariz., in 4:39.84 to 4:39.88.

Frazier, who attends Ravencroft High School but does not compete for the school, hadn't raced since April 4.

And she wasn't sure whether she'd come to the Prefontaine Classic for the high school miles that were announced in April. She contacted one of her racing friends, Stephanie Jenks, to find out who was going to be in the meet and whether it'd be worthwhile to accept Nike's invitation.

Frazier was glad she made her first trip to Hayward Field.

"I got energy from the crowd," she said. "It was exciting."

The boys race was exciting, too, thanks to Carlos Villarreal's monster kick in the final 150 to catch Mikey Brannigan and fly by him to win the race in 4:05.25. Brannigan was second in 4:05.78 and Jack Salisbury was third in 4:06.74.

Villarreal, from Rio Rico High, and Jones both said that Marcus Wheeler's recent suicide, which rocked the Arizona running community, had affected them deeply. They both wore orange wristbands in Wheeler's memory.

"Marcus was a great friend of mine so I told myself this one is for him," Villarreal said.

Brannigan, who flew to Oregon with a ESPN E:60 documentary crew following him around, looked like he had the race almost sewn up coming off the final turn. Brannigan is a big fan of Steve Prefontaine and said it was a thrill to run at Hayward Field for the first time.

In the two sprints races there were no surprises. Georgia state champions Candace Hill, a sophomore from Rockdale County, won the girls 200 in 23.64. Ryan Clark of Bannerker was clocked in 20.77 and won by a wide margin.
