Imagine the world’s two fastest men — Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay — crouching into the starting blocks for the 100 meters at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field.
Or the staccato claps descending from the East Grandstand as Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva takes aim at a world record in the women’s pole vault.
Or even the roar greeting Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele as he rounds the Bowerman curve, pushed to the tape by a world-class field of distance runners.
It could be possible following Saturday’s announcement by the organizers of a new global track and field circuit — the IAAF Diamond League — that includes the sport’s brightest stars for the 2010 season.
The Diamond League will be composed of the 14 most prominent meets in the world, spread across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the U.S.
The Prefontaine Classic is one of those meets. The 2010 edition will be held on Saturday, July 3, at Hayward Field.
The Diamond League “ambassadors,” who were introduced at the IAAF Gala at the Fairmont Hotel in Monaco on Saturday, include Bekele, Bolt, Gay, Isinbayeva, Australian pole vaulter Steven Hooker, Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, U.S. quarter-miler Sanya Richards, Norway javelin thrower Andreas Thorkildsen and Croatian high jumper Blanka Vlasic.
“This is the biggest development in the Pre Classic since it first began,” said Pre meet director Tom Jordan, who attended Saturday night’s gala.
